Extracurricular overload

Scott Harper, a Canadian filmmaker, made a wonderful documentary called Lost Adventures of Childhood. It’s about what’s going wrong and right with childrearing today.

I have posted a few short clips from the film. In this one, I talk about how an overload of extracurricular activities can crowd out free play and wear children out. You also hear from a little girl talking about her eye-wateringly busy schedule.

Canadian TV on childhood

An interview I did on Canadian TV on Slow Childhood and Slow Parenting. It was over the Web, which is why I am wearing an earphone. I’m not listening to music at the same time!

This is a short clip from a full-length show that is posted elsewhere on the site under the name “Free-range kids?”

Morning TV on childhood (Part 2)

In 2005, I gave a long interview about my book, Under Pressure, on morning TV in Canada. That means we talked about children, parenting, education, etc. This is Part 2 of the interview. Part 1 is a separate clip on the site.

It’s a dog’s life

What do hyperparents do when the kids finally leave home? They start micromanaging their dogs.

Think canine sports tournaments, canine yoga and canine spas. A night club for dogs has even opened in New York.

What next? Canine Kumon?

Slow Parenting

A Web TV interview I did about modern childhood and parenting.
